NYC DOE/IS 125 Dress Code Policy

NYC DOE/IS 125 Dress Code Policy & PE Dress Guidelines

In order to maintain a positive learning environment, it is expected that IS 125Q students dress in a professional manner. We expect IS 125Q students to be dressed appropriately to ensure safety and to keep the focus on teaching and learning. We would like all parents and guardians to remind students of proper dress protocols on campus.

Prohibited forms of dress at IS 125Q include, but are not limited to:

1) Hats or caps (with the exception of headwear worn for religious observance).

2) Clothing that contains references to drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, racism, or gang-affiliation.

3) Clothing that does not provide coverage of torso, undergarments, and private body parts, including see-through garments of any kind.

4) Flip-flops.

5) Sunglasses while indoors.

If a student comes to school wearing clothing prohibited by the Dress Code, then the student’s parents will be notified, the student may be subject to the interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code, and the student will be expected to make appropriate adjustments to his/her clothing to conform with the Dress Code (e.g., turning shirt inside out, borrowing temporary clothing until the end of the school day, etc.).

Physical Education Dress Guidelines

This year, ALL IS 125Q students will receive a top and a bottom and a lock at no cost to you. We are working with the Parents Association on a Wolf Gear site where families can order additional PE clothing if they so choose. Replacement locks cost $10.

Beginning September 4, 2025 and new for IS 125Q students: All students are required to come to school on PE days, dressed for Physical Education. Locker rooms are not available for changing, just storing personal items in the gym lockers. This allows for more active engagement for each student during each PE period.

The list of appropriate PE clothing is as follows:

  • Sneakers
  • Shorts, Sweatpants, T-shirt/Sweatshirt: we prefer that students wear the IS 125 PE gear, but students can wear similar clothing and be counted as prepared for class.

These items are not allowed during PE class:

  • Hoodies present a hazard when playing activities such as soccer or basketball as a hood can be pulled on.
  • Crocs/Slides/Shoes/Boots.
  • Hoop earrings and rings present a hazard to the person wearing them and others around them.
  • Jeans or similar tight pants present a safety risk to the student wearing them. Some activities may still be allowed with jeans or similar pants, but students would be considered unprepared.
  • Baggy pants off the hips are not permitted students cannot run safely with baggy pants on.
